How to: Nurse in Public, a giveaway!

Sponsored by Tomoson.com

I'm NOT a fan of nursing in public.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care if YOU do it. I'm not going to stare disapprovingly at your baby eating his dinner. I support your right to feed your baby, however you choose.

As for me and mine, we'll be in the car. With the sun shade up. In crisis lock down mode. Hiding. Because I like my breasts covered in public. I'm a little uncomfortable with the whole process, largely because I KNOW OTHER people are uncomfortable with it.

There are a LOT of nursing covers out there. The average nursing cover acts as apron, hangs around your neck, and covers the baby like a blanket. They're like an apron on steroids...the actual neck may be stiff...to hold it out so you can see your baby.

These are about as popular as a box of rocks with most children. Actually, the rocks would probably take the number one spot-they can put those in their mouths. The aprons just get kicked, beaten, shooed. I've never had a baby that liked them, and I've nursed three.

And so, I hid.

This changed, rather quickly, last week. I received a Baby Bond Nursing cover to review.

This is big, people.

And it's just so common sense based. It's basically a sash you wear from shoulder to waist, with a double layer in the front. You simply leave your shirt on- YAY- and nurse. You do have to wear an appropriate shirt- I've used it now with button downs and nursing tanks, flawlessly, not so much with a crew neck shirt.

The baby doesn't care. This is brilliant. I may STILL have to hide occasionally, because she's easily distracted, but it won't be because I'm embarrassed anymore.

This is easily the one product I've wished I had with all of my babies- any new nursing mom would LOVE it.

Baby bond offers three different and very cute options- I chose the original in Charcoal. The others are awesome, as well!

The best part is...
Baby bond is giving one to one of my readers!

Entering is simple: Be a public follower of my blog, and tell me in a comment
how you feel about nursing in public, and which baby bond product you'd like to receive. I'll select a winner via random.org, on 4/1/11. Please make sure I have a way to get a hold of you-I'll gladly contact via email, twitter, facebook, or cafemom message, so let me know!

For an extra entry, tweet about this giveaway, and leave the link to your tweet. You can use the handy button.

Good luck!

Nyuk, Nyuk, Nyuk...

This is the sound my child has been making. At seemingly random points throughout the day. It's kind of maddening, as she's clearly saying it TO me, and I had no idea what the heck she was saying. We aren't fans of the three stooges, although she does accompany it with a whack now and again.

It's the noise she makes when she swallows. She wants to nurse, and she invented her own special series of words for it. I'm fairly sure she's actually capable of saying the word, "nurse" or at least, "drink" but every time I ask her to she shakes her curly head and says no.

Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk,

I will not give in to this. I'm going to keep calling it nursing. I'm going to win this one.

Judgy mommies...Shut up, already!

Every mommy is doing it wrong according to somebody. I promise.

Before I go all rambly, let me show you what I'm looking at: A mom blogger over at the stir, talking about her experience with breast feeding, postpartum depression, formula and her husband's reaction.

He told her to stop breast feeding. Eventually, she did. She needed anti-depressants, people. This kind of thing, when it goes untreated, causes people to kill their children in horrific fashions, and then we all look at each other and say, "how does this stuff happen?"

Look at the comments below the blog if you head over there. The mommies show up, en mass, to berate her for choosing to formula feed so she could get help for her depression, even going as far as insulting her husband for not being more supportive.

Um, okay. Ladies, she gave it the old college try. Breast feeding isn't FOR everyone. Just because you laid down with your perfectly shaped, gorgeous newborn, clad in a 100% organic cotton onesie that was hand knit by a person you met on the Internet and shipped to you via fed ex, had a perfect latch and then produced several gallons of milk a day, all while looking perfect and losing more weight than you gained with said precious baby, does NOT MEAN that everyone CAN or SHOULD breast feed.

Yes. We all know, breast is best. I feel thoroughly justified in my rant-y high-horsed-ness right now, as I am STILL NURSING my eighteen month old daughter. Because, I DO produce buckets of milk and I only get the mild, normal baby blues brought on by the lapse of the pregnancy hormones.  I could probably produce enough milk for an entire proverbial village.

Now, back to your corners, girls. Play nice.

As mothers, sisters, daughters, etc etc and so forth...we should really be more supportive of each others decisions. Really. Because unless a mommy is slipping some Bailey's into the bottle, the reality is, that decision is theirs. And we are all doing SOMETHING someone else disagrees with.

In Defense of Modesty...

I spend a lot of time over at cafemom...love the prizes, giveaways, the political discussion, and a lot of the bloggers. The militant mommying, not so much. From carseats to breastfeeding, express a dissenting opinion, and the naysayers come out in force.

I've seen hundreds of opinions expressing that it's perfectly ok to breastfeed in public. Even that you should encourage a nursing mom not to hide. Personally, this nursing mom thinks it's bull. Breastfeeding is my choice, and every witty word has been expressed by loftier thinkers than I extolling its virtues. But the bottom line is, it still involves a breast. A part of the body that is considered highly sexual in nature. Heck, not even considered. Breasts are fondled, photographed, fantasized about, and exposure in a film is strictly PG13. Men (and some women) see them and think sex, sex, sex. What is so hard to understand about that?

Nursing a baby changes your relationship with your breasts. Suddenly, they are function over form, and nurturing hormones flood your body every time you do it. It's good for you, it's great for baby, and it's completely free. No wonder women get so enamored with the right to do it. No wonder they stand up, passionately, for their right to do so. No wonder witty words abound.

I will never be one of those women. I think a breast is a breast and it belongs in a shirt. I believe that it is easy enough to feed your baby modestly and still go about your life, without forcing your opinions, and the sight of your breasts on everyone surrounding you. Nursing accessories abound to help people stay covered. I've breastfed three babies, for over four years of my life. When my baby is hungry, we find a quiet, private place to go, where both of us can concentrate on nursing.

I can't imagine that many babies nurse well in a public environment. I know none of mine do, even if I go in a bathroom to settle down with Angelbaby, she's looking around every second there is a noise. It seems like public nursing is more for the convenience or political stand of the mom. It sure doesn't serve the baby, if they are like mine.

That's just me. I know the militant mommies abound. I understand their passion. But please don't tell me I don't need to cover up, or that my parenting skills are somehow inferior because I have respect for others around me. I will continue to go and find someplace quiet, where no one else has to look at my breasts. I will sympathize with people who find public breastfeeding "icky". I will continue to live and let live.

It's your right to breastfeed in public. It's my right not to. Neither one of us is a better parent than the other because of this.
